Join us on a walking tour of Kilranelagh to hear about the history and engaging legends associated with the hill. Learn about the mysterious Tuatha De Danann and the fascinating heroes of old. Get away into nature to explore our forgotten past. This is the real ancient Ireland, where you’ll escape the crowds and find the Ireland you’ve always dreamed of.
We will start at Kilranelagh graveyard which is the second oldest graveyard in Ireland. There we will visit the hero of the Irish rebels, Sam Mac Allister’s grave; as well as the curious Gates of Heaven; and St Brigid’s holy well where we will drink of her healing waters.
From there we will continue to St Brigid’s chair and headstone – cure for headaches and backpain

Boleycarrigeen stone circle
A secret hidden Cairn, tucked away in a magical forest clearing
Crossoona Rath with its Ogham stone, and location of a the battle place of Michael Dwyer and the Irish rebels
The Cows of Aife – the white stones of Bae Aife mentioned in the Fingal Ronan Saga
From Kilranelagh we will also take in the views of Baltinglass hill’s pinnacle with its megalithic tomb; Kaedeen’s huge hill figures and Cursus; and Brusslestown ring – one of the largest hill forts in Europe.
The fascinating stories associated with each place will transport you to another time and place. These sites are not easily accessed without guidance, they are hidden gems, untouched and wild, not to be missed.

Where we’ll be:
Kilranelagh is a privately owned hill near Baltinglass in the foothills of the beautiful West Wicklow mountains. This area contains the greatest concentration of prehistoric hillforts in Europe and Kilranelagh has many ancient sites. We have obtained exclusive permission to run tours on the hill. The ancient historical sites are hard to find, tucked away in the beautiful forests on the hill. We will guide you to these hidden treasures.
What guests should bring:
Suitable warm waterproof clothing and footwear for walking outdoors should be worn.
A snack and something to drink.
Meeting location: Kilranelagh graveyard
Directions: Kilranelagh is a 10 minute drive from Baltinglass, Co Wicklow. The meeting point at Kilranelagh Graveyard can be found on Google maps. There is no public transport directly to the graveyard. The closest public transport is by bus to Baltinglass. A pick up from Baltinglass can be arranged for up to 4 people, please contact us directly to arrange.
Minimum age: 12 – Minors can only attend with their legal guardian.
Activity level: moderate
Although the hill is not large, a suitable level of physical fitness for hillwalking for around three hours is required. Some of the tour is on uneven and slippery ground so care should be taken. Some small stone walls will need to be scaled, so comfortable appropriate footwear is necessary.
All tour participants must remain in the presence of the guide and follow the direction of the guide for the duration of the tour.
Please be advised that the hill is on private property and we will be walking through a working farm and forest.
