Baltinglass, Brusslestown ring and surrounds full day tour

Get off the beaten track and discover the wonderful West Wicklow, Ireland’s Ancient East.
We will visit West Wicklow’s ancient sites including a stone circle, a huge ogham stone, Brusslestown magnificent hillfort ruin and the quaint Dwyer McAllister thatched cottage.
Discover the beautiful old sites of Baltinglass town’s 12th century Cistercian Abbey and the 18th century gaol. View Baltinglass hill with its cross, prehistoric ringfort and Neolithic passage grave.

As we travel, we will share with you the history and interesting stories associated with the area. From the mysterious legends of the mighty Fianna and the Tuatha de Danann, to the heroes of the 1798 rebellion, to the controversial post office mistress who started the Battle of the post office. High kings and beautiful maidens lived and died here, mighty warriors roamed and hunted on the hills.
The fascinating stories associated with each place will transport you to a forgotten time.

Itinerary

We will start at Baltinglass where we will take a walk around the town and visit the old courthouse, the 1860’s gaol, and the Cistercian Abbey.

We will then break for lunch at one of the Baltinglass pubs or cafes, or if you prefer, you could get a takeaway from Hangry for Hotdogs and sit by the beautiful river Slaney to eat your lunch.


From there we will hop into our transport to visit Brusslestown ring, possibly the largest hillfort in Europe.
After that we will continue on to the Dwyer McAllister cottage, the huge Knickeen Ogham stone, Donoughmore church and Castleruddery stone circle.


Finally, we will head back to Baltinglass where you may have time to visit one of the local pubs or restaurants, or even take a walk in the beautiful Lord’s wood before heading home.

Meeting Place: Outside Baltinglass Library, Baltinglass, Co Wicklow

Transportation:
This is a walking and driving tour. My car can only take 4 passengers. Please notify me if you would like transport arranged for a larger group.
To get to Baltinglass, there is a public bus to Baltinglass – Bus Éireann, Route 132. (Please note that the bus timetable does not coordinate with the tour times. If you don’t have your own transport to get to Baltinglass, it would be advisable to book a night or two in Baltinglass to ensure you can make the tour times.)

Maximum travellers: 8

Weather: The tour will go ahead even if it is raining. But as much of the tour is outside, please make sure you wear suitable warm waterproof clothing. As we will also be cllimbing Brusslestown ring, please wear good comfortable footwear for hiking.
The tour will only be cancelled if there are severe weather warnings and it would be unsafe for hillwalking.

Extra:
Please bring a snack and something to drink for the walks.
Money for lunch and snacks / coffee as well as cash for a donation to the church if you would like an information booklet on the Abbey.
Wheelchair accessibility:
Some parts of the tour are not suited to wheelchairs and pushchairs. Please let me know if anyone in your group has wheelchair requirements and I can create a customized tour that does not include these areas. This will cut the tour to 5 hours and reduce the cost.
Children:
The hillwalk is a long walk for young children so it is more suited for those over 12 years of age, however, children may attend with their legal guardians.
